Regional District of Nanaimo Regional Parks and Trails Service Regional Parkland Acquisition Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 1961 2025

Background

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) purchased 360 hectares of land known as Hamilton Marsh to preserve it as a regional park and conservation area. The RDN needed the consent of at least two-thirds of service areas to borrow $21.2 million over 20 years towards this purchase. For Nanaimo residents, this means a cost of $2.50 per year for each $100 000 of assessed property value. Hamilton Marsh is a rare peat-based wetland surrounded by a coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem. It is home to many species of wildlife. This purchase aligns with Canada’s goal of protecting 30 percent of our land and water by 2030. Info about the marsh: https://hamiltonwetlands.com/
